I offered to do a beta build of Dragos' Brown B-1 racer, and was very happy when he took me up on it (love those classic racers).

Initial observations: The file is A4 size, but Dragos left enough kerf on top and bottom so that it can be printed at 100% on letter size paper too - smart. Its 56 pieces are arranged neatly, and there is a clearly labeled drawing of the finished airplane on the parts page to serve as instructions. There are no glue tabs or glue strips provided with the beta. The wings are laid out against the paper grain, which will make it more difficult to obtain a smoothly rounded and crinkle free leading edge. Rotating these parts 90 degrees would be preferable, if possible. The model is equipped with a seat and instrument panel. I don't know if Dragos has any further cockpit details in mind for the model's final release. The assembly style is paired bulkhead. There is a tall, narrow hump down the center of the aft fuselage which I expect will offer a challenge when forming the skins.

I've started cutting paper, so there will be more soon. Sorry about the photo, I can't get it to post correctly. It keeps coming out as a negative in the preview. Weird.

A few of you have my private e-mail (cause I gave it to you), but if you e-mail me, could you shoot me a warning her in the forum first? something like, "Hey dent, shot you an e-mail."

The reason I say this is I have two jobs, one of which is on my computer....and I have about 2000 e-mail contacts. so trying to remember who is who, and where they came from gets a tad confusing.

Someone of you have shot me e-mails before, and i didn't respond. mostly because i wasn't sure who you were, (E-mail and nick name aren't the same yanno) but if you did, and never got a response, let me know in pm, I mean no insult.....I just got alot going on online.

Thanks guys :)

I have no idea how many UK members are on this forum, but for those who are here and - like me - have had some difficulty finding thick heavy duty (1mm - 1.5mm) card, the following may be useful.

Postage rates aren't too painful, they will send samples if you want to check out something first and the prices are excellent. With the proviso of course that the place specialises in re-cycled card.

There are other weights available, so ordinary card from around 150gsm and up are available, prices likewise are extremely favourable.

This is one of the very few places I've found that carries 1mm in A3 and A2 sizes.

There's paper, envelopes and all sorts of other stuff on the site, but here's the link to the card section. Hopefully this helps somebody.

Eco Craft Online Store

1 and 1.5mm card is towards the bottom of the page.

I didn't made the "legs" straight like in the instructions, just to give it a little momentum pose...

As a rookie with low budget in this great hobby, and having a few rolling stock cars and locomotives, I have thought it would be nice to try a different type of vehicle - so I decided to make a draisine (as we call this type of rail cars in Europe).

This is the original vehicle, as far as I know it's a Polish vehicle - AGMa its name, also used in Romania, Russia and probably a few other countries.

(Photos by my Romanian fellow modelist Sogard2003 - thanks! )

So, I started using ordinary materials, some plastic (for the chassis and the crane arm), wire (thin for suspension "wings" plus brake shoes, and steel wire for the other things), a little bit of cardboard (for the cylinders on the chassis belly) and super-glue.

And then, a better painting...

You may also notice some round thingies on the crane arm - a cog-wheel and two pairs of nuts (taken from a clock - I gave the nuts a round shape using a nail file, as I had not four real little wheels).

And finally, some other details attached and... voila! It's alive! IT'S ALIVE !!!

Thank you for watching.

Hello,
my company made a partnership with an author of a new belgium graphic novel about an old engine from the 40s, the Type 12 Pacific.
There is an interesting website here about the novel and the engine
http://www.12-ladouce.com/
The reason I am posting this is that I have access to the 3d model which is describe at this page
http://www.12-ladouce.com/en/the-12004.html (look at the video at the bottom).
And I think I could use it as the basis for a paper model. I don't have much experience in actually creating models but I think I can start making a simple one then try to unfold more complex elements.

I wonder if some of you would be interested in helping.
Best regards
Benoit

I know some of us still mourn the apparent demise of 3dpaper, the Korean supplier of paper models that were beautifully printed, pre-scored and perforated for easy part removal. I just got back from two weeks in Korea, and found numerous bookstores, stationery stores, and even a few hobby shops. No sign of 3dpaper, but there was a line of educational, child-oriented models, mostly of architectural and Korean historical subjects:

http://www.scholas.co.kr/shop/shopbrand.html?xcode=003

The stock is very thick and inflexible, paper-faced foam or cardboard, and the design is very boxy, with lots of visible tabs. The choice of subjects and some of the artwork and printing are very similar to 3dpaper (Korean Turtle ship, subjects from the multi-player game Lineage), but no figures. The thick stock lends itself more easily to architecture. It appears to me the old company was acquired or transformed itself to reinvent itself as an "educational" supplier.

The boxy designs were not appealing to me, so I didn't bring any home.

Led Zeppelin is the new addition for the Rock`n`Roll Circus series. I want to make clear that this papercraft is a model avaliable for free! In the .rar file there are no music or any other kind of material related to Led Zeppelin, only a paper model made by a fan to be shared with those who love Led Zeppelin. I say this because I had problems with some of the bands honored with this type of paper model. His latest is a design of a starship from a 1979 SF Novel. Using only a single Image, and alot of speculation, he came up with this. Well done my Friend, Well Done! :) No download yet, and not sure if there will be one (THis might have been a one-off) But still a share worthy design and build. :D

I first saw 2001 ASO when I was 9 yrs old. It made a very big impression on me, (and still does,) and was pivotal in the decisions I made later in life about my career and personal interests.

Out of all SciFi films I've seen, the 'hardware' in 2001, is for me the most realistic.
The Discovery was, and still is, my MOST favourite SciFi spacecraft.

I have always wanted a model of her, but have never really found one that satisfied my yearning! Or, prices were not in my budget......!!
So, after a bit of searching and detective work, I found the card version from UHU02. (And NO, I am NOT telling how I got it! (at the request of the designer))

The size of this model and the detail is spot-on for me. And, without the need for the airbrush, that keeps the missus happy, because there are no paint fumes in the home.....

Here in Holland, we use gsm as paper weight measurement. (The imperialists lost the battle ... )
And reading comments and the few blogs/forums on the subject in hand, I decided to print out the whole model in 3 weights: 80 gsm, 120 gsm and 160 gsm. These weights should accommodate load-bearing structures, structural forms and the more delicate parts.
I have to say: It sure helps to have my good lady running her own sucessful copy/print business ....

Anyway, I figuered there were going to be a few instances of FUBAR's occuring, so in some cases I decided to print a couple of extra copies of a few of the pages in the model. Especially the nutty nuts......

So, with straight edge, scalpel, a beer and some of Amsterdams finest , I went nuts on the first one......

It was at this point that I discovered that my eyesight and hand control is not what it used to be....(Grand old 50 next year..... )
Basically, the result of the first nut was not exactly brilliant......

Attachment 105295

I sat there thinking and wondering how long my sanity was going to last on this project, let alone the consumed liter-age (<--note: more metric stuff!!) of beer and full ashtrays.... I have to mass-produce ,was is it, 33 of these things????

CLICK!!! 3 earlier (a lot earlier,) years of Production Engineering experience switched on a brain-cell somewhere screamed: JIG !!!!

So, spending most of the evening and 2 attempts to get it right (I think), I made a simple jig, in the lateral shape of the nuts, out of a few laminated pieces of thick card. I made sure that all the curves, angles and straight edges were 'spot on' at the bottom edge of the hexagonal 'pit'. That should give a good firm, square, correctly shaped form to push against when gluing down the tiny tabs.

Using the 160 gsm paper, I used the jig for the second attempt.
The system worked really well for the gluing process. Until I tried to get the nut out of the jig............... The model is card, the jig is card, the glue is white glue..... You dont need to be an engineer to work out the result.

Muttering to myself in frustration (already) ,and looking for more rolling papers, I suddenly thought of a colleague of mine from long ago, who's nickname was TEFLON; Because nothing stuck ....

"What a silly **** I am!", I exclaimed. SILICONE !!!!! Not a lot sticks to that either, AND it is waterproof (marine grade). That should solve the problem of the glue soaking into the jig and gluing the nut to the jig.........

So, here is a pic of the jig, now coated in a thin, well worked silicon 'shield'....

Attachment 105296

So, I will let you ponder over the stress created, when I discovered about 50 items in my bits box (my whole attic is a bits-box, to be honest),.............

Attachment 105297

But then it wouldn't be a true paper model......

Would it.........
No, but the nuts are exactly the correct size....

Yeah, but IT'S NOT PAPER!!!

But, the angles of the metal nuts are exact, ensuring a true linear spine ....

Yeah, BUT IT'S NOT PAPER!!!..

I know, but, NOR IS THE WOODEN DOWEL STRENGTHENING THE SPINE, Ok it is the same material, but, ......

You get my point ........

Hello,
I built this mirage 2000 from Ojimak, a very simple model, took me just a few hours (evening + morning) the only difficult part was gluing the canopy to the fuselage as I had chosen 80g paper and the fuselage wasn't very rigid.
The attractiveness of this model is that like the other ones from the same designer it can fly (glide). I will try to capture it while it flies before a crash finishes it but it is quite fun.

If I'm not mistaken it's a variation made from Shunichi Makino's TIE-Interceptor, but idon't remember where i found it. But I still have the PDF files (without instructions, it's not that hard :p), so if you'd like it MP me i'll send it.

Here are the pics :
So what do you think ? I'll try to make a stand for it, even though it's not bad like this coz it's usually standing on a glass shelf.

Hello!

As some of you know, the Dreidecker is one of my favorite aircraft. In this thread I present the construction of several Dr.1s. Namely: all the free downloads I could find in the web of the Dr.1.

Yes, all the Fokker Dr.1s in the following photos can be found for free. They will be shown one by one.

All kits were printed with a laser printer on 0.20mm white cardstock. All the edges were painted with red/black Sharpie markers, except when other colors were needed (in which case were painted with Prismacolor pencils).

All the kits were printed at the original size they come in except where specified.

All the kits were built following the instructions/diagrams/photos provided by the designers where available. We could say they are “out of the box”, with very little or no modifications at all from me besides the edge coloring.

The kits presented here are the following:

- Fokker Dr.1 designed by Marco Lallo (Recortecole)
- Fokker Dr.1 designed by Winky & ShaunGamer
- Fokker Dr.1 designed by Maquettes de Papier
- Fokker Dr.1 designed by Daniel Peters
- Fokker Dr.1 flying paper model, designed by Corneles A. Huisman v.1
- Fokker Dr.1 flying paper model, designed by Corneles A. Huisman v.2
- Fokker Dr.1 flying paper model, designed by Eiichi Yoshida
- Fokker Dr.1 designed by Olli Bizer
- Fokker Dr.1 published by the German magazine “YPS” in 1978
- Fokker Dr.1 designed by F. Prudenziati
- Fokker Dr.1 very simple model designed by Rubén A. Martínez (me)
sjsquirrel is doing such a great job with his big SR2, I thought a tiny one can only compliment it, so in the same scale as my tiny SR1, I give you the SR2, in Cerberus colors.
Have no fear, I will release it... Once I finished test building the same model in its ME3 Alliance colors. ;)

Hi everyone. When I was very young and Apollo missions were flying, I used build my own rather crudely designed Lunar Modules and Apollo spacecraft in paper and card. Of late I've done more stuff with paper casting and papier mache. You can see some recent projects of mine

here (1/10 scale T.rex skeleton)

I'm hoping to learn some things about pushing paper to the limit from you all. I might not post a lot of my own stuff for a while but I'll be watching and learning from you all.

As some of you may know, Adam Yauch, better known as MCA of the Beastie Boys, passed away Friday the Fourth. I wanted to do something to pay tribute to him, but, unfortunately, my alternating weekly regular subject/pony toy schedule didn't really give me time to work on a Beastie-related model. So, two weeks after MCA's passing, I'm finally getting started on the project!

The model is that of a Robot Spaceship kind-of-thing from the group's music video for their song Intergalactic: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qORYO0atB6g&ob=av2e

So far, I have the head and torso done:

here's a prelim sketch:

and here's the problem with doing a subject from a music video:

Hi, I have been a member on here for over a month now, but got my hand smacked by the moderators yesterday, for not introducing myself here! So, here goes then!

My name is Daniel. You can call me Daniel, Dan, Danny, I don't mind (But, if you call me rich, then I know you are lying!! )

I am currently living in Almere in the province of Flevoland in the Netherlands. I have been living and working here for over 6 years now.
Originally, I was born in southern England, but when I was nine, the whole family up and moved to South Africa (my father had a 5 year work contract there.) There I remained for the next 27 years.... In 1996 I returned to England, as the living conditions in South Africa were, (and still are,) rather dangerous. (The Apartheid regime has reversed roles now, since Mandela was released). I stayed in England for a few years and moved to the Netherlands in early 2006.
I miss South Africa dearly; The land, the African skies, the climate.... They say that once you have Africa in your blood, it stays in you forever. That is very true.

Anyway, that was then. Now, I spend most of my time working as a Database Administrator for a document management (archive) company. This job is not physically demanding, but mental. Some nights I get home feeling like I have run a marathon, but have been sitting on my butt in front of 3 computer monitors for over 9 hours

In my spare(?) time, I keep the missus entertained, (as best I can,) cycle a lot, read, or do scale modelling.

I will be honest from the start: I am new to papercraft, but have many years experience working with plastic models, and what helps me now with this 'new' medium, is that I am a very quick learner! (The day you stop learning, is the day you die!)

What brought me here, and what stirred my interest in paper modelling, you will learn, when I start posting about my current project. I will start a new build thread soon.

Well, there you go, a quick run down of me. It doesn't tell you much, but if you want to know something specific, please feel free to ask!

Thank you for having me on board, and I hope I can contribute something positive to this hobby over time.

Take care and happy modelling!

(I will leave you with one tip: Never tie up your shoelaces in a revolving door.!!)

hi
So, I've become interested in this field of R/C
and I am trying to figure out what might
be the best starting point. I don't want to
get something too cheap causing me
to buy something better 5 months
down the line. I do well with challenges
and I'm able to make the "money" work right
for the right car. I have seen that TC3s and Tl-01s
are pretty popular for sliding. Might you guys have
any other suggestions? I know of Yokomo but they
are seemingly expensive compared to other companies.
Anyways, I'm open to the input you guys have to give!!!

thanks!!

Hi new guy here, a bit about me, always enjoyed working with paper as an art medium, began with origami but recently started papercraft.
Being a gamer I tend to use video games as my models. I've completed 2 Portal Companion Cubes (first one kinda sucked & conveniently my son got a hold of), Vendetta Mask, a Pokemon for my daughter, a 1-UP mushroom & yesterday I finish Starfox's Arwing for my wife.
While my designing skill is non-existent, I did fabricate 2 snazzy cellphone holders (built the first one) that turned out quite effective, though I now see I have much to learn about 3d rendering & unfolding. Once I get a better feel for the controls here perhaps I'll post them, they're simple, 3 pages I think.

I haven't tried it yet but it looks like a great way to enlarge and sharpen at the same time. Its intended for low rez 72 dpi files to enlarge and still have a sharp image for print.

So...I first discovered paper modeling at the library waaaay back in the nineties when I found a book in the library titled: Making Paper Airplanes, by Roger Hawcock. I made every model in that book! My favourite being the Sopwith Camel. I made a few of those.
Then life continued and I had to put the hobby on hold.
Early this year I was surfing the interwebs just to see if I could find a model or two to kill some spare time and I was blown away at the quantity and quality of models available--for free even! I've been hooked (again) ever since. Life is still life, but I find time to work on models when I can.
So far I've made an AT-AT, mini snowspeeder, mini X-wing, and Ron Caudillo's USS Enterprise NCC-1701 (tos). Since I completed the Enterprise, I have been searching for top quality Enterprise models. So far I have all of them except the one from 2009 (but I'm working on that;-)). I even found the CV-6 Enterprise!

Had some free time this bank holiday Monday so finally got a prototype of the first of my Hitchiker's TV bobbleheads - Marvin the Paranoid Android.

Way I mess around it will probably take me years to do all 5 (Marvin is the easy one), but Marvin should be available well before the end of the year.

And yes he will have both arms and legs in the final version :D and the next version will be texture mapped.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7APOJDJM2iM

Air traffic controller and private pilot James Price has never flown a jet, but he has logged plenty of time in the cockpit of an actual 737 that he converted into a flight simulator and keeps in his garage. Price had already been working on earlier versions of his simulator when a life change and similarly motivated friend led him to pursue his pastime with renewed vigor. Price told the Mercury News that on the advice of friend Matt Ford (who had already hauled home his own 737 cockpit), he visited a boneyard in Ardmore, Okla. There, Price found and purchased a 2,500-pound 737 cockpit shell of his own for $1,500. He then brought it to a hangar at Livermore Municipal Airport, in California, where he got to work. It's come a long way since then. Price now estimates his total dollar investment at close to $150,000.
Price incorporated into the shell the many genuine parts he'd accumulated since starting down this road in 1994. And then he purchased additional authentic parts. His simulator now includes the seats, controls, instruments and lights from an actual Boeing 737. The project came home from the hangar on the back of a hired semi-truck in 2009. Price took four feet off of the nose and removed some portion of the garage door to fit it inside. The internal realism is augmented with external visuals provided by three projection screens that pull down to surround the cockpit. The projectors incorporate terrain scenery for the entire world and can adjust to present near real-time weather gathered from the internet. His system allows him to fly simulated engine failures and fires or land with blown tires all while bathing in the tactile feel and even the smell of real cockpit components. Price sees the simulator as an ongoing project and expects to continue to improve on it as he's able

The story of William Rankin's ejection at 47,000 feet and 500 knots is legendary, not only because the fall took him 40 minutes, but also because he lived to talk about it. There are other and more recent cases of people who have been drawn into thunderstorms under canopy and not every one ends in survival.

To those who may not know Goldenbear from his work, now's your chance. A world class designer of models, and a great source of technical information, also, one of the most knowledgeable persons I have ever had to pleasure to know. I would urge those interested to say how a professional designer and modeler goes about it, here is another to add to your list. His reputation precedes him, and I'll probably get a note saying "Say whaaaa" but that's worth it. Goldenbear gave me a gift of the R.F. Iena. The print quality was unlike anything I have ever seen. Cutting those many pages into small parts would be like cutting up the Mona Lisa for a collage!
Elmer's Glue-All and Elmer's Wood Glue were used to bond the cardboard parts to the plastic body and metal chassis!

Hello!
I registered some time ago and am now getting around to introducing myself.

I like building, and even tried my hand at designing paper figures, toys, crafts for myself and my kids. I am in the middle of redesigning a website to host them at. I'll post pictures of my projects when I can and hopefully have links ready to share them.

In the meantime, looking forward to being a part of the community!

I have been working on a Piper Cub for some time now. Doing and redoing the parts. Well today with a lot of help the windows are donw which was a major hurtle. A friend told me about a special glue he used and it did the trick. Formula 560 Canopy Glue which I got at a hobby store. Just cut the piece your working on, glue the surface and stick it to the plastic. I placed it on parchment paper so it wouldn't stick to it and another on top. Place a few heavy books and go work on something else. Nothing to it. I hope this helps someone else with the same problems. wc

I got a big HO set and lost interests but but that's not to say I won't try it again. Being retired I have the time but my life has been taken over by card modeling. I was hoping some one could point me to vending machines. What I need is a 1950's coke machine. Laying down or standing up. Red of course. If any knows of this could ya give me a link?

It has been a long time since I started a thread here, so I will try and see if people can find it.

This is a prototype model that I design in Rhino and color in PSP. It is based upon the not numerous photographs of the period and also on the existing plans that are tucked away in French Museums. She and one of her sister ships, Neptune, both have peculiar high walls on the top deck which served to contain the boats and their storage apparatus. The class had a third ship, Marceau, which had a very different apparearance.

The three ships were ordered as successors to Hoche (1886) and went through a succession of alterations during their development and building. One of the big arguments was over the main armament. In the end they did not adopt the compromise solution of Hoche - Single 430 mm guns fore and aft in turrets and single lateral barbettes with 274 mm guns - but placed 430 mm guns in all four positions. Their weight was such that they could only be placed in barbettes rather than closed turrets. They were quite small ships, only 323.5 feet long, and rather narrow of beam.

In the end they were all near disasters as sea going vessels. They were on the ways for a very long time thanks to a political interruption which nearly led to their cancelling. Their engines were never very sound or reliable and Magenta and Neptune were awkward in maneuvers because of their high superstructures. With wind blowing they acted something like sails and made her difficult to handle. Additionally, if all the guns on a broadside (3 340 mm guns) were turned out then she listed so as to drown the armored belt and to put her at risk of rolling.

My progress has been slow up to this point in time but I have some free time and hope to push her forward. I began with the lower hull. Here are photos.
I have not explored the whole site yet but it's looking good, and so are the models I have downloaded. There's a guy on another forum who started making similar cars, and decided to charge for him. These are way past that, and they are FREE! These came off of the 1:24 scale page, there are many more pages!! These cars have interiors! That blows me away. They could scale up and make for some nice R/C bodies.
I'm a pretty young guy, still got a couple of years to go until I finish my undergraduate structural engineering specialized civil degree in university.

I have an interest in paper/card modeling in general, and light weight, flyable paper aircraft models in particular.

I have only begun digging though, and reading about liftline's (an older member) experiences on this forum has been a great learning opportunity.

Tools/knowledge I'm familiar with:
Mathematics
Very basic electronics
Sketchup
Glue and scissors

Still have a lot of learning to do when it comes to aerodynamics and paper modeling techniques! So tips/books on that would be super.

Anyway, looking forward to getting to know you guys :)

I decided to start building daishi Normandy SR1 with working lights to set it off. I've scaled it up to 980mm long so she will be big when finish. There's about 35 sheets of parts so i'll be very busy for a long while.

I'm starting at the front of the fuse first. I add balsa in some areas to strength it up & strips of 200g of card.

I'll be going with 5mm SMD super bright LEDs in blue for the engine & i'm thinking of adding dull white LEDs on the fuselarge of the ship but i'll see how it turns out when she is lit up.

While I'm waiting for the LEDs to arrive in the mail i'll start of at the front of the fuselarge of the Normandy.

Here are the pics what i have done.

Hallo dear paper friends!
I am working on a project involving a rather complex gear train. I would like to test the functioning of the gears without spending a lot of time with paper (that will be the final target...). I need a material easy to cut (possibly by means of the usual cutter) and sufficiently compact to ensure the test success. I tried a kind of polistyrene, but it tends to crumble..., so it does not work.
The gears have a diameter of about 15 cm, and a thickness of about 1-1.5 cm.
Any suggestion?
Thank you very much!
All the best!

A.K.A. The Wooden Wonder or Mossie :)

This is a model of Mk.II night fighter, armed with four .303 Browning machine guns and four 20 mm Hispano Mk.II cannons in the bomb bay. Published by Polish Mały Modelarz, it is, lets say, of intermediate difficulty (e.g. Halinski would need about as many parts for interiors as MM for the whole model :)).

It is, in fact, my first model with laser-cut inner construction - makes life much easier and fingers much less sore from the cutting of thick cardboard :)

Cockpit section fits together nicely :)

With wings it will come out rather large (about 50 cm wide). It won´t get lost under the mess on a table, that is for sure :)

The cockpit - it has wrong color, so I repainted it with green. And did some upgrading here and there - cutting out the dials, attaching some "knobs" on the boxes inside (radio, radar and such...)

All right, I´ll take that :) We move on to next fuselage segments...

(the parts are actually dry-fitted, so the gap between will not be this wide...)

To be continued...

can no remember where i got this one(i am sure someone here will know).
i do not care much for star treck but i really like the shape of this ship, and just wanted to do something different for me.

and here it is

one thing about the model i dont like is that the pylons(?) between the engine to dome are real thin. just looks like to me that the engines would take off and leave the ship there! but oh well. overall i am very pleased with it!

I'm trying to find the time and the initiative to build some models. If (and when) I do, I'll try to get some pictures to send in. Meanwhile, great builds.

Hey just got interested in paper models, as a kid I did origami a lot so am hoping that talent will help me out here.I also have done plastic models for a long time so I have patience to work on something for a long time to make it nice. Currently I am working on a model of the Titanic along with ones of her sisterships Olympic and Britannic. Aside from modeling I build home made violins So that is where my main time is spent right now. The time I can spend aside from my college courses.

Hey guys, my first real thread. I plan on building some paper tank models for use in Warhammer 40k, and I definitely want to use something to strengthen the cardstock. I am familiar with working on pepakura armor, but I have never done the fiberglassing or resin for those. I know Resin though would ruin details on a model that small. Do you guys know of any kind of spray hardener that would make the exterior of my model paintable as well as giving it some durability?
